Nuraghi: an ancient history

Nuraghi are unique evidence of a civilisation that flourished in prehistoric Sardinia, dating back some 3,500 years. These imposing towers, built with stones without mortar, are scattered all over the island, forming an exceptional archaeological heritage. Their origin and exact function remain a mystery, but theories vary from defensive structures to ceremonial or even astronomical purposes.

Nuraghi, mystical architecture

The structure of the nuraghi is surprising in its complexity. The towers are built with large stone blocks stacked on top of each other without the use of mortar, creating a truncated cone-shaped structure. Some nuraghi reach considerable heights, with inner chambers, spiral staircases and intertwining corridors. We will take a closer look at the architectural features of some significant nuraghi, such as the Nuraghe Su Nuraxi in Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nuraghi: which are the main ones

For those who wish to explore the nuraghi in person, Sardinia offers a wide variety of spectacular sites. From north to south, through the central regions of the island, we will immerse ourselves in the most significant sites. Through detailed descriptions and practical advice, we will guide readers to discover the nuraghi of Arzachena, Macomer, Thiesi, and many others.
