When to go to Northern Sardinia: climate, sea and best months
Northeast Sardinia has a longer beach season than you might think: from mid-May to mid-October the sea is swimmable and excursions are active. But each month has a different character — and choosing the right one changes the shape (and cost) of your vacation. Here's a month-by-month guide, with tips to decide based on how you travel.
May and June: the spring of the sea
In May, the Mediterranean maquis bursts into bloom, temperatures reach 25 degrees and the beaches are practically private. The sea is cool (18-21 degrees) but already swimmable for the bravest, and underwater visibility is at its best: it's the golden time for snorkeling at Tavolara. June steps everything up a notch: water at 22-24 degrees, long days, excursions fully operational but without the July crowds. For value for money, the second half of June is probably the perfect week of the entire season.
July and August: the peak of summer
These are the months of the warmest sea (25-27 degrees) and the richest calendar: departures even in the evening, dolphins at sunset, everything available seven days a week. The downside: maximum prices, beaches with restricted access that need to be booked, parking filled by 9 AM, and the best excursions must be booked nearly a week in advance. If August is the only option, the strategy is to move early in the morning, book everything online in advance, and choose the first half of July or the last half of August when possible.
September: the month for connoisseurs
Those who know Sardinia return in September: the water retains the warmth of summer (24-25 degrees until the end of the month), the light becomes golden, prices drop by 20-30%, and the coves of the archipelago return to silence. All excursions remain active at least until the beginning of October. It's the ideal month for couples, photographers, and for those who want to rent a boat without traffic at sea. One caveat: a few more disturbances, but tours canceled due to weather are always refunded.
From October to April: the secret Sardinia
The Gallura winter is mild (rarely below 10 degrees) and offers clear days perfect for hiking along the coast, visiting villages, and vermentino wineries. Boat excursions almost all stop from November to March, but dolphin watching continues on sunny weekends until late October. Flights and accommodations are very inexpensive: it's the right season for a long weekend between Olbia, the market, and the deserted coast — with the promise to return when the sea calls.
What is the best month overall?
For the best balance of warm sea, low crowds, and prices: the second half of June or September. For the absolute warmest sea: August. For snorkeling with maximum visibility: late May and June.
When is it most likely to find the mistral?
The mistral can blow all year round, with more frequent gusts in spring and autumn. In summer, it usually lasts 1-3 days: excursions adapt by sailing in sheltered areas, and the Gulf of Olbia remains almost always navigable.
Is the sea swimmable in May?
Yes, but it's cool: 18-21 degrees. On sunny days, the sheltered and shallow coves (Cala Brandinchi, the pools of Santa Maria) warm up significantly, even from mid-May.
When do flights and accommodations cost less?
