La Maddalena in one day: itinerary between the archipelago and historic center

One day for the La Maddalena Archipelago is little — but if that's all you have, it can be done well. The secret is to choose: either the day on a boat among the islands (the right choice for the first time), or exploring by car between La Maddalena and Caprera. Here are both itineraries, with actual times and costs.

Option 1: the day on a boat among the islands

It’s the archipelago as you see it in the photos: you depart between 9:30-10 from Palau or La Maddalena, sailing towards Spargi (swimming at Cala Corsara), passing in front of the Pink Beach of Budelli and stopping for a long time at the natural pools of Santa Maria, with lunch on board. Return around 5-5:30 PM. By motorboat it costs from €55 with lunch included; by sailing catamaran, with small groups and local wine, from €95. If you are staying on the coast, depart from Palau and save the ferry: the boat itinerary is the same.

Option 2: car, ferry, and the island's beaches

The ferry from Palau takes cars and scooters every 30 minutes (15-minute crossing). On the main island, the classic tour covers the historic center with its little squares and cafés by the harbor, then the beaches: Bassa Trinita and Monti d'a Rena to the northwest, and lo Spalmatore for snorkeling. The bridge to Caprera leads to Garibaldi's island: the Garibaldino Compendium (museum in his house) is worth the hour of visit, and Cala Coticcio — the 'Tahiti' of the archipelago — can be reached by 40 minutes of trekking or admired from the sea. Return with sunset from the ferry: the best free view in the area.

Where to eat and what to bring

On the boat, lunch is almost always included: pasta, main course, and wine on the motorboats, more curated menus on the catamarans. If you explore the island by car, the center of La Maddalena offers seafood trattorias by the harbor (gallurese soup and fried fish are sure bets) and bakeries for beach lunch. In both cases: swimsuit on, beach shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, and cash for parking and the park ticket. In high season, book the tour a few days in advance: the best boats fill up quickly.

Is it better to take the boat tour or go around the island by car?

First time in the archipelago: boat, without a doubt — Budelli, Spargi, and Santa Maria can only be reached by sea and are the reason the archipelago is famous. The car is better for those who have already been by boat or are traveling with someone who doesn't enjoy sailing.

How much does the full day cost?

Is it possible to do everything in one day?

No, you can't do both together calmly: the tour takes the whole day. If you only have one day, choose the boat; if you have an extra evening, you can add the historic center of La Maddalena on the way back when the ferries run late.

Does the itinerary work for children as well?

Yes: the motorboat is designed for families (spaces, restrooms, slide) and the ferry crossing is always fun. With a stroller, the car option is the most convenient; however, Cala Coticcio is off-limits for little ones, as the trekking is challenging.
