Where is Neptune's Grotto?
Capo Caccia is an important and well-known limestone promontory located about 20 km north of Alghero that houses a truly astonishing karst formation: the Grotto of Neptune. The cave is “a must-see at least once in a lifetime,” it is a stunning and breathtaking attraction. Its beauty was also immortalized in the 1978 film The Island of Fishmen by Sergio Martino with Barbara Bach as the protagonist.
When was Neptune's Grotto discovered?
The story of its discovery is lost in the mists of time as the exact date is not really known. Certainly, it does not seem plausible that the ancient populations that inhabited the area never entered it; it is also certain that there are remains of human settlements in the caves located nearby. However, to this day, the first documented discovery of the cave is attributed to the Alghero fisherman Ferrandino, around the end of the 1700s.
How to reach the Neptune's Cave?
The famous Neptune's Cave can be reached essentially in two ways:
- By land: Neptune's Cave is just over 20 km from the center of Alghero, so it can be reached in about 20-25 minutes. Heading north by car or bus towards Fertilia Alghero Airport, you take the Strada Statale 127 Settentrionale Sarda and reach the promontory of Capo Caccia where there is the Escala del Cabirol which, with its more than 600 steps, leads to the entrance of the Cave;
- By sea: Neptune's Cave can be reached by boat on one of the vessels that provide daily trips and excursions to Neptune's Cave departing from the Port of Alghero or the Porto Conte dock. The entrance to the caves is at sea level, therefore it is only possible in favorable weather and sea conditions. During the boat tour to reach the cave, you can admire the famous Coral Riviera and the promontories of Capo Galera and Punta Giglio. Once you reach Capo Caccia by boat, you will find the entrance to the cave near the Foradada Island.
How many steps are there in Neptune's Cave?
The Escala del Cabirol consists of 654 steps; if you decide to reach Neptune's Cave by land, remember that there are 654 steps down to reach the entrance and then... 654 steps to climb = 1,308 😄. The Escala del Cabirol was opened in 1954, and its construction is attributed to the architect and philosopher Antoni Simon Mossa. The staircase is about 400 meters long and runs along an almost vertical cliff about 120 meters high. Its name, Escala del Cabirol – literally in Catalan “Stairs of the Roe Deer” – is presumably due to its zigzagging course along the wall, resembling the agility of deer as they ascend and descend rocky surfaces.

Neptune's Cave is about 4 km long, with the currently visitable tourist route spanning a few hundred meters where there are large underground halls, ponds, galleries, tunnels, and incredible formations of columns, stalactites, and stalagmites. The first hall you see is the one where the Lago La Marmora is located, close to the majestic stalagmite of about 2 meters called Acquasantiera.
