An iconic symbol of Gallura: Bear Rock, also known as Capo d’Orso, is one of the most famous natural monuments in Sardinia. Located in the territory of Palau, this striking granite formation dominates the landscape with its unmistakable silhouette that, from a certain angle, resembles the figure of a bear.
Bear Rock: An Easy Path
Reaching Bear Rock is simple and suitable for everyone. From the center of Palau, just follow Via Capo d’Orso for about 4.3 kilometers, until you reach a bar on the right. Continuing for about 100 meters on an unpaved road, you will come to a wooden gate marking the beginning of the trail. The path is well-marked and presents no particular difficulties, leading you directly to the summit of the granite rise.

Once you arrive at the lookout tower, you will be greeted by a breathtaking panorama that extends over the islands of the Maddalena Archipelago, the Gallura coast, and the crystal-clear sea. To admire the true image of the bear, we recommend continuing on the rocks to the left of the tower.
A place rich in history: Bear Rock was already known in ancient times and served as an important landmark for sailors navigating the seas off the Gallura coast and the Strait of Bonifacio. Ptolemy described its geographical coordinates and referred to it as "Promontorium Arcti", meaning "Promontory of the Bear".

The legend of the Lestrigones: According to the writer Victor Bérard, Capo d’Orso may be identified with the land of the Lestrigones, a race of cannibal giants described in Homer’s Odyssey.
