In the Alghero area, it is very easy to see dolphins because many dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) reside and live in the Protected Marine Area. Occasionally, in particularly lucky cases, it is also possible to see animals such as the Stenella, the common minke whale, and marine turtles like the Caretta caretta.

Among the avifauna observable during boat excursions, you can find specimens of the great shearwater and the storm petrel, and among the raptors, the peregrine falcon.

The Protected Marine Area Capo Caccia and Isola Piana is truly a hotspot of biodiversity, mainly due to the high presence of diverse types of habitats. The abundant presence of species of high interest has led to the area being designated as an Area Especially Protected of Mediterranean Importance.

Among the flora and fauna that can be spotted in the Alghero area during snorkeling and scuba diving excursions, there are:

  • colonies of red coral (Corallium rubrum) from which the homonymous Riviera takes its name;
  • lobster (Palinurus elephas) commonly found in the Alghero area;
  • parapandalo shrimp;
  • stony corals and gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata);
  • the nacre, the largest bivalve shell in the Mediterranean (Pinna nobilis);
  • sponges (genus Clathrina) and cnidarians (Parazoanthus axinellae);
  • Posidonia oceanica present in vast meadows that support this beautiful biodiversity.

Capo Caccia is an important and well-known limestone promontory located about 20 km north of Alghero that encloses a truly astonishing karst formation: the Neptune's Cave. The cave is "a must-see at least once in a lifetime," it is a captivating and breathtaking attraction. Its beauty was also immortalized in 1978 in the film The Island of Fish Men by Sergio Martino, featuring Barbara Bach as the protagonist.

The history of its discovery is lost in the mists of time as the exact date is not really known. Certainly, it seems unlikely that the ancient populations living in the area had never entered; it is equally certain that in the caves located nearby there are remains of human settlements. However, today it is believed that the first documented discovery of the cave occurred around the late 1700s by the Alghero fisherman Ferrandino.

The famous Neptune's Cave can be reached essentially in two ways:

  • By land: Neptune's Cave is just over 20 km from the center of Alghero, so it takes about 20-25 minutes to reach. Head north by car or bus towards Fertilia Alghero Airport, take the Strada Statale 127 Settentrionale Sarda, and reach the Capo Caccia promontory where the Escala del Cabirol is located, which, with its over 600 steps, leads to the entrance of the Cave;
  • By sea: Neptune's Cave can be reached by boat, with tours and excursions to the cave departing daily from the Port of Alghero or from the Porto Conte dock. The entrance to the caves is at sea level, therefore it is only accessible in favorable weather and sea conditions. During the boat tour to reach the cave, you can admire the famous Coral Riviera and the promontories of Capo Galera and Punta Giglio. Once you reach Capo Caccia by boat, you will find the cave entrance near Isola Foradada.

The Escala del Cabirol consists of 654 steps. If you choose to reach Neptune's Cave by land, remember that there are 654 steps down to reach the entrance, and then... 654 steps back up = 1,308 😄. The Escala del Cabirol was opened in 1954, and its design is attributed to the architect and philosopher Antoni Simon Mossa. The staircase is about 400 meters long and runs along a cliff that rises about 120 meters above the sea. Its name Escala del Cabirol – literally in Catalan "Stag's Ladder" – is likely due to its zigzagging path along the wall, reminiscent of deer that ascend and descend the rocky cliffs with agility.

Neptune's Cave is about 4 km long; the currently accessible tourist route is a few hundred meters where there are large underground halls, ponds, galleries, tunnels, and incredible formations of columns, stalactites, and stalagmites. The first hall you see is the one with the Lago La Marmora near the majestic stalagmite of about 2 meters called Acquasantiera. The attractions of Neptune's Cave that can be visited are:
