Discover the Bear Rock: a trail between history and legend

An iconic symbol of Gallura: The Bear Rock, also known as Capo d’Orso, is one of the most famous natural monuments in Sardinia. Located in the territory of Palau, this evocative granite formation dominates the landscape with its unmistakable silhouette that, from a certain angle, resembles the figure of a bear.

Bear Rock: an easy trail

Reaching the Bear Rock is simple and suitable for everyone. From the center of Palau, just follow Via Capo d’Orso for about 4.3 kilometers until you come across a bar on the right. Continuing for about 100 meters on a dirt path, you will arrive at a wooden gate that marks the beginning of the trail. The path is well marked and does not present any particular difficulties, leading you directly to the top of the granite rise.

Bear Rock: a breathtaking view

Once you reach the lookout tower, you will be faced with a breathtaking view that extends over the islands of the Maddalena Archipelago, the Gallura coasts, and the crystalline sea. To admire the true image of the bear, we recommend continuing onto the rocks to the left of the tower.

A place rich in history: The Bear Rock was already known in ancient times and represented an important landmark for sailors navigating the Gallura seas and the Strait of Bonifacio. Ptolemy described its geographical coordinates and referred to it as “Promontorium Arcti,” meaning “Promontory of the Bear.”

The legend of the Lestrigones: According to the writer Victor Bérard, Capo d’Orso could be identified with the land of the Lestrigones, a people of man-eating giants described in Homer’s Odyssey. Ulysses, having landed here in search of food and water for his crew, would have encountered this hostile people who caused the loss of two of his ships.
