La Prisgiona: The Nuraghe in Arzachena

The nuraghe La Prisgiona is an archaeological site located in the Capichera valley in the municipality of Arzachena, in the province of Sassari.

It was built in the 14th century B.C. and used until the 8th century B.C. The nuraghe is triangular in shape and consists of a central tower and two side towers incorporated in a bastion. The bastion is surrounded by an outer wall that encloses an area that was also used for water supply, thanks to the presence of a well about 8 metres deep that is still active today. The complex consists of a nuraghe and a village of about 90-100 huts, spread over five hectares.

Due to its large size and number of buildings the site is considered unique in the Gallurese Nuragic context. Also nearby is the tomb of the giants of Coddu Vecchiu.

The nuraghe La Prisgiona is one of the most interesting nuragic sites in north-eastern Sardinia, thanks to its unusual architectural structure and the archaeological data that have been found during excavations. The site has been open to visitors since 2009, after undergoing major restoration work that lasted several years and is still ongoing.

The nuraghe La Prisgiona has been open to the public since 2009. It is possible to visit the nuraghe and the village on foot. The site is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The cost of the ticket is € 5.00.

The History of the Nuraghe La Prisgiona 

The nuraghe La Prisgiona was built in the 14th century B.C. and used until the 9th century B.C. The nuraghe is of the complex thòlos type, a rather rare typology in Gallura. The nuraghe consists of a central tower (keep) and two lateral towers that form a bastion. The entrance to the keep is marked by a massive lintel 3.20 m long. The central chamber has a false dome more than 8 metres high, and is equipped with three niches. The rampart is further protected by a wall delimiting a large courtyard.

Where is Nuraghe La Prisgiona?

The nuraghe La Prisgiona is located about 6 kilometres from the town of Arzachena. It can be reached by taking the provincial road to Luogosanto (SP14). A short distance away (about 1 km) is the Coddu 'Ecchju tomb of giants.
