What to see in Arbatax

This little corner of Sardinia is like that quiet guy at a party who, as soon as you get to know him better, turns out to be the most interesting guy in the room.

Le Red Rocks of Arbatax are a unique natural spectacle. These red porphyry formations emerge from the clear waters, creating a dramatic contrast with the blue of the sea and the green of the surrounding vegetation. At sunset, the rocks seem to glow with light, making them a magical place for photographs or simply admiring the view. A curiosity: the Rocce Rosse have been the set of numerous commercials and even some films, becoming a visual icon of Sardinia. Every summer, this place hosts outdoor events and concerts, adding an artistic touch to its natural beauty.

Built in the 17th century, the Lighthouse of Cape Bellavista dominates the promontory of the same name. Positioned 165 metres above sea level, it offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the east coast and the mountainous hinterland of Ogliastra. This lighthouse is not only a landmark for sailors, but also a place full of historical charm. It is said that during the Second World War, the lighthouse was a strategic observation point, and even today, old bunkers and military posts can be discovered in its vicinity. As you walk up to the lighthouse, you pass through Mediterranean scrub scented with myrtle and juniper, making the experience even more atmospheric.

La Tower of San Gemiliano dates back to the period of Aragonese domination and was part of a system of coastal towers built to spot pirate raids. It is located on a small promontory that offers an incredible view of the Bay of San Gemiliano. The tower is perfectly restored, and climbing to its top you can admire both the crystal-clear waters and the outline of the inland mountains. Local legend has it that the tower was also used by peasants as a refuge during times of raids, and it is said that small objects hidden by refugees were found in the area, which are now preserved in local museums.

The Bellavista Nature Park, within the Arbatax Park Resort, is a microcosm of Sardinian biodiversity. Among its paths, one can encounter animals such as mouflon, wild boar, fallow deer and even wild horses. A special feature of the park is the conservation project for the local flora and fauna: aromatic plants such as rosemary and thyme grow wild and perfume the air, while animals are protected in semi-freedom. A unique experience is to participate in organised excursions at sunset, when the golden light makes the landscape even more impressive and the animals are more active.

This archaeological site is a window on the antiquity of Sardinia. The complex comprises a nuraghea tomb of giants and some menhir dating back to the pre-Nuragic period. The menhirs, huge vertically erected stones, are thought to have been used for ceremonial purposes or as astronomical markers. The Tomb of Giants, so called because of its elongated shape that seems to accommodate a reclining giant, is one of the most fascinating places on the site. To visit this complex is to step back thousands of years, imagining the ancient peoples who lived in symbiosis with nature and cosmic forces.

Lido of Orrì: Known for its fine, white sand, this beach stretches for several kilometres and is ideal for families thanks to its safe, shallow waters. It is perfect for snorkelling enthusiasts: starfish, small coloured fish and posidonia meadows can be admired in its waters. A curiosity: after a swell, fishermen tell of spotting dolphins near the shore.

Cala Moresca: Located behind the Red Rocks, this cove is shrouded in an aura of mystery. According to a local legend, the cove is named after the Moorish pirates who used to land there to hide their loot. Its deep waters and granite rocks, shaped by the wind and the sea, offer a different swimming and relaxation experience from the wilder and more adventurous Lido di Orrì.
