Capo Caccia is an important and well-known limestone promontory located about 20 km north of Alghero that encompasses a truly astonishing karst formation: the Neptune’s Grotto. The grotto is “a must-see at least once in a lifetime,” a breathtaking and charming attraction. Its beauty was even immortalized in the 1978 film *Island of the Fishmen* by Sergio Martino, starring Barbara Bach.

The history of its discovery goes back to ancient times as the exact date is not truly known. It certainly doesn’t seem plausible that ancient populations living in the area never entered. It is equally certain that there are remains of human settlements in the caves located nearby. However, today, it is generally believed that the first documented discovery of the grotto occurred around the end of the 1700s by the Alghero fisherman Ferrandino.

The famous Neptune’s Grotto can essentially be reached in two ways:

• By land: the Neptune's Cave is located a bit more than 20 km from the center of Alghero, so it can be reached in about 20-25 minutes. Heading north by car or bus towards Fertilia Alghero Airport, you take the Strada Statale 127 Settentrionale Sarda and reach the promontory of Capo Caccia where the Escala del Cabirol can be found, which with its more than 600 steps leads to the entrance of the Cave;
• By sea: the Neptune's Cave can be reached by sea aboard boats that offer tours and excursions to Neptune's Cave departing from the Port of Alghero or from the Porto Conte pier. The entrance to the caves is at sea level, therefore it is only possible in favorable weather and sea conditions. During the boat tour to reach the cave, you can admire the famous Coral Riviera and the promontories of Capo Galera and Punta Giglio. Once you reach Capo Caccia by boat, the entrance to the cave is located near Isola Foradada.

The Escala del Cabirol consists of 654 steps; if you decide to reach Neptune's Cave by land, remember that there are 654 steps down to reach the entrance and then… 654 steps to climb = 1,308 😄. The Escala del Cabirol was opened in 1954, and its construction is attributed to the architect and philosopher Antoni Simon Mossa. The staircase is about 400 meters long and runs along a cliff that drops about 120 meters into the sea. Its name Escala del Cabirol – literally in Catalan “Staircase of the Roe Deer” – is presumably due to its zigzagging layout along the wall, which resembles roe deer that nimbly ascend and descend rocky walls.

Neptune's Cave is about 4 km long, and the tourist path currently open for visits is a few hundred meters long, featuring spacious underground halls, small lakes, galleries, tunnels, and incredible formations of columns, stalactites, and stalagmites. The first hall you see is where the Lago La Marmora is located, near the majestic stalagmite of about 2 meters called Acquasantiera. The attractions of Neptune's Cave that can be visited are:
